The meaning of gift and eternal
It is natural to think that, even if we can't earn eternal life, we must have to do something or to keep some sort of condition to retain it.

Suppose a friend won the lottery and decided to have a brand new Porsche delivered to your house as a birthday present. If you began getting a monthly bill for $1,000, you would doubtless conclude that what he gave you was a loan, not a gift.
