If we went to a friend's house and saw his son standing on the peak of the roof, three stories high, with a Superman cape on, ready to jump, we'd be alarmed. We might say, "Tommy, hasn't your father told you never to jump off the roof?" Now, what if he replied, "Yes, Mr. Smith, but I know my daddy, and I know he'll forgive me." What would we say to him? We wouldn't try to tell him that he's wrong about his father's forgiveness. Rather, we would try to convince him that the reason he has been forbidden to jump is precisely because he is loved and that his father doesn't want him to experience pain and trauma.
