C.S. Lewis pointed to the analogy of the "body of Christ" -- that we are all members of that body. Figuratively, one is an eye, another a foot, and another a hand. Every member added enables the body to do more. If you want to help those outside, you must add yourself to the body of Christ who alone can help them. Cutting off a man's fingers would be an odd way of getting him to do more work.
