It still seems I should do something
But as soon as we come up with a reasonable and godly definition of what that something might be, that's when we begin to confront the problem. We always fall so short of real goodness just as in the analogy about swimming to Hawaii.

The point is not that receiving Heaven as a gift is too easy. It's that earning our way is absolutely impossible. We all fall far short of the requirements of a holy, perfect and just God and stand condemned before Him because of our performance. Our performance of good deeds is not the solution -- it's the problem! We just can't get there from here that way. There must be a different solution.
