A second principle of interpretation is that the Bible should be read in its plain and normal sense -- just as you would a newspaper. If your friend sent you an e-mail and said that her two-year-old son is a tank, what would be the plain and normal way to interpret that statement? Would you take her to mean that her son has artillery mounted on his forehead? No, you would assume she means that he's stocky in build and may even be a little destructive around the house. That's a "plain and normal" interpretation.
