But isn't God supposed to be loving and forgiving?
It's true that God loves and forgives. But let's not fall prey to the "peril of the pendulum" -- a pendulum swings from one extreme to the other but never stops in the middle. That's how it is with popular notions about God. One extreme is to think of God as a heavenly ogre or killjoy, spewing out hellfire, damnation and brimstone. It's as if He were booming out a question from Heaven, "Is anyone down there having a good time?" Somebody says, "Yes," and God shouts back, "Well, cut it out!" Focusing only on the justice and holiness of God to the exclusion of His love and forgiveness grossly distorts and slanders the character of God.
