It's true that God expects and wants us to be good. The issue is not whether or not it's good to be good. It's a win-win for us and for God. When we treat our friends, neighbors, spouse, kids or even enemies the way the Bible tells us to, life goes much better for everybody. But more precisely, does living a good life have anything to do with getting us forgiven by God and into Heaven? The Bible's answer is an emphatic "no!" In Paul's letter to the Christians in Ephesus, he said, "For by grace you've been saved through faith. That's not of yourselves; it's a gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast." |
